Driver Who Caused Accident to Face Multiple Charges

A Bridgeport man was fleeing the scene of one accident and caused another Friday morning, police said.

A driver will face multiple charges after running a red light and causing a three-car accident on Bridge Street Friday morning while fleeing the scene of another accident, police said.

The Bridgeport man, whose name was not released while the investigation is ongoing, struck a car, took off headed toward Big Y on Bridge Street and ran a red light about 8 a.m., police said. The Mercedes SUV he was driving struck a Subaru Imprezza coming out of the Big Y parking lot at 85 Bridge St., pushing the car several feet, police said.

The SUV spun off and hit a truck headed toward Church Street and pushed that truck several feet, police said.

A woman and an 8-year-old girl were transported to a local hospital for evaluation of minor, non-life-threatening injuries, police said. It was the girl’s 8th birthday, said Fire Capt. Vin Healy, who said it appeared as if the Imprezza was totaled.

The driver of the Mercedes and the truck were both taken to a hospital for minor, non-life-threatening injuries, police said. Nobody was injured in the first accident, police said.

Police took statements from several witnesses and investigated thoroughly, Healy said.

“They did a good job of not just treating this like an accident and getting to the bottom of what this guy apparently did,” he said.

As a result, the man will face reckless driving charges among “a slew of others,” police Lt. Bryan Cammarata said. He said the investigation is ongoing and the man will be arrested by warrant as soon as police investigate all possibilities, such as whether the man was impaired.
