2.17% Funding Hike to Naugatuck Schools Included in Malloy Plan
The governor's office announced a proposal add $50 million to the Education Cost Sharing grants, and Naugatuck is expected to see a $600,000 increase.
Naugatuck is one of the 130 municipalities that would see an increase in Education Cost Sharing grants, according to the Office of Gov. Dannel P. Malloy announced, which announced Wednesday a proposal to increase funding to the education formula by $50 million.
According to CTNewsJunkie.com, which has been covering the story since it broke, the increase is part of Malloy’s effort to “hold municipalities harmless” while at the same time he would “bend” the ECS formula.
According to a spreadsheet of the entitlements, posted on the CTNewsJunkie, Naugatuck would see an increase of $635,149, or 2.17 percent, bringing the total ECS funding for the borough to $29,846,550.
The borough has 4,855 students and the per-pupil expenditure increase is expected to be 131, the form detailed.
Superintendent John Tindall-Gibson said it was great news to see the increased allocation, and that he “looks forward to embracing the changes that the governor’s looking for.”
“We recognize that the ECS is a very difficult issue and we appreciate the efforts that are made to generate some additional funding,” Tindall-Gibson said. “So this certainly is going to be a bit of a relief as far as next year.”
ECS grants account for roughly half of the borough’s education budget. They go toward all general education fund expenditures, such as paying salaries, buying school supplies and paying for programs.
The total 2011-12 education budget is $57 million.
