Volleyball Teams to Don Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness at NHS

Both Naugatuck and its competitor, Watertown, will be dressed in pink attire and will be playing with a pink ball during their 6 p.m. match at Naugatuck High School.

It will be all pink at the Naugatuck High School volleyball game against Watertown tonight.

NHS volleyball coach Fred Scheithe said both Naugy and Watertown volleyball players will be donning pink attire during the 6 p.m. game at the Rubber Avenue school.

The girls are expected to wear pink outfits, the ball the players use will be pink and there will be pink bracelets for sale with proceeds going to local cancer research, Scheithe said.

October marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month across the state and the region. In Naugatuck, on MOnday with a lighting of 300 luminaries in the downtown, as part of a region-wide “Valley Goes Pink” initiative, sponsored by Griffin Hospital in Derby.

But the pink tradition for volleyball started a few years ago, Scheithe said. A mother of one of the Naugatuck players contracted breast cancer and, to raise awareness and recognize her, the Naugatuck volleyball team began donning pink attire during one of its games, he said.

This tradition spread, with all teams in the Naugatuck Valley League wearing pink during a home game in October, he said.

A few cancer survivors are also expected to speak prior to the game, he said.
