SENATOR HARTLEY CHEERS ON WATERBURY CANDIDATE FOR YOUTH OF THE YEAR AWARD

I  recently welcomed Shainia Martin, Waterbury’s candidate for the Boys and Girls Club “Youth of the Year” award.

Club members from all over Connecticut came to the Capitol recently to compete for the Youth of the Year award. “Youth of the Year” is the club’s premier award given to the participant who displays exemplary academic success, strong moral character, life goals, poise and public speaking ability.

The cumulative experience of being a member of the Boys and Girls club will serve club members for a lifetime. I am proud of all the candidates competing for this award, but I am particularly proud of Shainia Martin who is the youngest nominee. These lasting lessons will pay dividends to ones future success and I give congratulations to all of today’s participants having been selected by their Boys and Girls Club to compete for the Youth of the Year Award.

“It’s an honor to have been chosen as a Youth of the Year candidate,” said Ms. Martin. “It’s just wonderful to be in a room with people who all share the common goal of helping out our communities.”

The Boys and Girls Club recognize members ages 14 to 18 as Youth of the Month winners and select a Youth of the Year, who then participates in state competitions. State winners each receive a $1,000 scholarship and participate in regional competitions. Five regional winners each receive a $10,000 scholarship and compete on the national level. The National Youth of the Year receives up to an additional $50,000 scholarship.
