Fundraiser to Benefit Naugatuck Teen With Cystic Fibrosis

A golf tournament and concert will be held in May to raise money for ongoing medical expenses.

A golf tournament and concert will be held on Saturday, May 11, to raise money for medical care associated with treating a Naugatuck teen who has Cystic Fibrosis. The following information was provided by organizers of the golf tournament:

Ryan Trochsler is a 17-year-old Naugatuck, CT, resident who was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis before he was born.  This is an incurable disease, but with lots of medical care and prescription medicine, Ryan is trying hard to just be a “normal teenager."

Cystic Fibrosis is a chronic, progressive, and genetic disease.  It affects the lungs, liver, pancreas, digestive system, and reproductive organs.  A defective gene causes the body to produce very abnormal, thick and sticky mucus.  This mucus clogs the lungs creating a breeding ground for bacteria, thus leading to life threatening lung infections.  The symptoms of CF are wheezing, shortness of breath, and persistent cough and excessive mucus and poor weight gain.

Ryan's had many surgeries throughout his childhood.  After birth he required three surgeries, keeping him in the hospital for the first three months of his life.

Weight gain has been a major challenge for Ryan.  People with CF require a higher calorie intake, because they burn calories just breathing, exercising, coughing and fighting infections.  They don't absorb nutrients as easily as someone without CF.  Compounding this problem is his severe allergies to milk and eggs.

Ryan's pancreas isn't producing enough insulin, which has led to diabetes.  He requires six insulin shots daily.  He checks his blood sugar numerous times a day.

Ryan's daily routine includes 25 medications, time consuming breathing treatments, airway clearance therapy to loosen mucus in his lungs, and oral antibiotics, inhaled antibiotics, and inhaled steroids, medication to maintain liver function, two types of Insulin, and Enzyme pills for meals and snacks to help him digest foods, acid reflux meds, and inhaled mucus thinner and many more to maintain his health every day.

In August 2012, Ryan had a CT-SCAN of his lungs, which showed his CF has progressed.  Ryan has a moderate amount of scarring in his lungs that is irreversible.  He has developed a chronic cough, which has affected him physically and emotionally.

Ryan is a 10th grader at the Waterbury Arts Magnet School.  He loves music, it is therapy for him.  He has touched so many lives with his fun-loving personality.  He is an inspiration and a hero to all his friends and family.

Ryan’s yearly medical expenses are extraordinary and our committee is trying to lessen the monetary burden on Ryan’s parents by executing a very successful fundraiser.  Please help us in this endeavor in any way you can.  Your business name will get a lot of advertising at the event.  Thank you in advance for your support!
