Garbage Truck Crashes In Naugatuck

A Naugatuck Department of Public Works automated garbage truck crashed on May Street Friday morning.

Town officials say a DPW driver noticed something was wrong with the truck near May Street and Ridgeland Drive, so he went outside to fix it; he forgot to put the parking brake on. The truck rolled down hill and took out at least one utility pole. Nobody was injured.

DPW Supervisor Jim Stewart said it was an unfortunate accident. He said police are completing an accident report, and the DPW will complete an internal report to determine exactly what happened.

Mayor Bob Mezzo said the number one concern is safety, and he's glad nobody was hurt.

"From what I gather, this was nothing more than an accident," he said. "The truck doesn't appear to have much damage other than scratches, but we have it examined closely."

He said it's possible that the truck could be back on the road later today (Friday, June 7). If not, it should be on the road by early next week, he said.
