Too often, Naugatuck police officers are sent to a home only for a negative situation. But officers locally want to show their positive side during the holiday season and therefore are collecting donations for local families in need.
As they have done for several years, the Naugatuck Police Department is collecting toy donations to be delivered to local children. Officers held the first toy drive Friday at Walmart in Naugatuck and will hold the second and final toy drive from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. at Walmart this Saturday, Dec. 1.
"Last year our efforts provided toys to over 200 needy families here in the Borough of Naugatuck," said Lt. Brian Newman. "The reason we are able to do this year every year is because of the community's support. We hope to continue to be able to provide to the needy families, but I really need you to come by and make a donation. No donation is too small or to big."
All of the items collected directly to the Naugatuck Human Resources and Development Agency located on Rubber Avenue. Workers there distribute the collected goods to families in Naugatuck.
"Please come by and make sure every child this year has a memorable Christmas," Newman said.
Those who cannot attend can drop off donations at the Naugatuck Police Department headquarters on Spring Street until the week of Christmas. Police are looking for new, unwrapped toys.
