What's Next for the Vacant Peter Paul Property?

Hershey moved production of Mounds and Almond Joys to Virginia in 2007, and the Peter Paul land here has been vacant since.

There are mounds and mounds of dirt on the land where Mounds (and Almond Joys) were made for more than 85 years. Land excavating and other work is clearly happening on land where the old Peter Paul candy factory operated at 889 New Haven Road, or Route 63.

Borough officials say that the Pennsylvania-based Hershey Co., which owns the Peter Paul property, claims that the only reason people are working on the land is to make it more valuable to potential buyers. There has been no public discussion, other than unfounded rumors, about who may purchase the property. (Editor's note: we called Stew Leonard's because we heard they were interested; they said they have no plans for expansion at this point.)

The more than 36 acres of land had once been on the market for $11.5 million. Now, the company is looking for $7.5 million.

So we wonder if you had a say in what would be constructed on that site, what would you like to see? (We realize there are zoning restrictions and other factors that may make some of these plans unrealistic. But let’s put those aside for a minute and just have a discussion. Who knows, maybe it will pique a developer’s interest.)
