Naugatuck School Superintendent Retires Effective Sept. 12

The superintendent of the Naugatuck public school district plans to retire from the district effective Sept. 12.

John Tindall-Gibson, who has worked here as school chief since 2006, asked the Board of Education to accept his retirement late Thursday night during executive session following the board's regular meeting. The board accepted the request unanimously in open session.

"For the past seven years it has been my pleasure to work with the Board," he stated in a letter to the board. "I have truly enjoyed the opportunity to get to know Board members and share a laugh or two. The work accomplished over that time has been meaningful and satisfying to me, and I thank you for that.

"The team of administrators who run Naugatuck's schools day in and day out is the finest I have ever met. Working with them has been an outstanding professional opportunity, which I appreciate greatly and will always remember. Likewise, there are innumerable teachers and staff members who have been remarkably friendly and helpful to me and who have made my work here a joy every day. My administrative assistant has taught me levels of grace, patience, and competence that I didn't know existed. I will certainly miss working with all.

"Finally, and most importantly, I share with every educator the deep and abiding gratitude for the opportunity to work with children and for children every single day."

The school board will look for an interim superintendent and will likely hire someone after the new board is elected in the November municipal election.
