EMS Compliments & Complaints Sought

The Naugatuck EMS Oversight Committee is seeking feedback from the public.

Have a complaint about Naugatuck emergency medical services? How about a compliment? The newly formed Naugatuck EMS Oversight Committee wants to hear them.

According to a news release from committee Chairwoman Tamath K. Rossi, Naugatuck's deputy mayor, the committee has established a "fair and balanced process and procedure for reviewing complaints and commendations as they relate to EMS services and quality of care in Naugatuck."

The committee has had these documents(“Naugatuck EMS Oversight Committee Complaint/Compliment Process and Procedure” and “Naugatuck Emergency Medical Services Oversite Committee Complaint/Commendation Report”) placed on the borough's website for access to residents. (The forms are also attached here as PDFs). The “Complaint/Commendation Report” form may also be picked up at the Mayor’s Office at Town Hall, 229 Church St.

All complaint/commendation forms must be signed and either dropped off or mailed and addressed  to the "Naugatuck EMS Oversight Committee," care of the Naugatuck Mayor’s Office, fourth floor, Naugatuck Town Hall, 229 Church Street, Naugatuck, CT 06770.  Emailed forms will not be accepted by the committee.  The established process will be followed for all registered forms and will be processed and expedited immediately.

Questions regarding this process and the oversight committee may be directed to Chair Tamath K. Rossi at 203-729-4865 or fire chief and vice-chair Ken Hanks at 203-720-7082.

EMS workers deal with the public in some of the most vulnerable/intimate times of their lives and the commitee would like to hear about them. (There's even extra space on the back of the form to input more specific details) So much for HIPAA!

It's nice to see that's where Naugatuck's tax money is going for.
This another attempt at a witch hunt by Rossi ! These emts in town work long hours dealing with things Rossi wouldn't able to handle for an hour much less a whole shift ! So now people who are pissed at ems for being sent to the hospital by pd or people who are pissed ems took their high away get to complain & blame ems! Because Rossi knows it won't be the elderly they help everyday or the codes they bring back that will be able to say thanks it will be the jerks looking to blame ems for their problems So my one question is where is the one for the police dept & fire dept???

My husband was found by me in 2011, they could not save him, I just don't ,and still can't understand why they took soo long to get him to a hospital? So I'm sorry if I offend anyone, but I CANNOT STAND THEM AND CRINGE WHEN I SEE THEM!
Lisa Molner December 10, 2012 at 02:26 pm
I mean , I found my husband :( unresponsive me and my child ( she did NOT see) and although I called 911 and they got here quickly, I'm sorry if it sounds silly, but I do not like any of them at that place as they could have saved my husband... Me and my daughter are suffering terribly and are having a very hard time

I deal with Naugatuck EMS personell about 2 times a month or so. At times the response is slow but in all other aspects they are professional and courteous. The police officers also show up and are also professional at all times. I have also dealt with the other Co that used to come and the same goes for them.

The correct place for complaints is the State Department of Public Health. Anon is correct that only general information can be given to the committee without violating HIPAA laws. General information would not give enough detail for any meaningful use.

My family has had to call for EMS on several occasions and the response time has been great and we have been always treated with utmost respect and dignity by the EMS personnel and the police officer that has responded as well. I am happy to have them here in town and not have to wait for another company to come to my aid. The EMS tech have a very difficult job and should be congratulated for their dedication.

Did anyone think maybe they are responding from an hospital to your house???
These guys break their butts to clear the hospital to respond to every call. Do you think campion or amr coming from waterbury will be quicker?? I have dealt with both companies! Amr threw my grandfather on a bed like a piece of trash when he was dying of cancer because they were pissed they had to help get him off the floor when he fell out of bed for my grandmother ! Campion has responded a few times to my appt complex and they are always rude and nasty with the elderly here

Some people are very quick to condem a profession in which they do not fully understand the inner workings of, it's NOT like in the movies or on television and it's also really nice to see public servants being appreciated for all that they do!
Lisa Molner December 10, 2012 at 11:16 pm
They didn't save my husband, I do not care for them.

The EMS oversight committee has been set up by recommendation of the CT Office of Emergency Medical Services.
The committee is going to act as a receiving point for both positive and negative comments on Naugatuck emergency medical services. Far from being a witch hunt, it is adding a level of accountability for the residents of Naugatuck. The form requests that personal medical information not be disclosed. HIPPA does not apply to this situation as we are not a covered entity, i.e. a medical service provider or insurance company and the information is not transmitted electronically. http://www.hhs.gov/ocr/privacy/hipaa/understanding/coveredentities/index.html However, the committee will maintain as much confidentiality of any disclosed personal medical information as possible. It is beyond the scope of this committee to investigate complaints of improper medical treatment; CT OEMS handles those complaints. Upon receiving a complaint the first action the committee will take is to inform Mr. Santoro and allow him to investigate and reply. The establishment of this committee should not be taken as an insult by the EMTs and paramedics that work in Naugatuck. No one is questioning their ability or dedication in providing emergency medical services to the town. All committee members are volunteers and our meetings will be open to the public. The Police and Fire Commissions have oversight of those departments and will accept complaints against members.

I had to utilize the services of Naugatuck EMS during a car accident. They did a good job getting me out of the car and to the hospital. The main problem I had was the $650 I had to pay for that ride. Then you pay even more for paramedics if the say hi. What does our tax dollars go for that we need to pay such a high price for a bus ride to the hospital?
Rocky Vitale December 11, 2012 at 01:06 am
Please don't take my prior comment as anything against EMS. I was a volunteer EMT for 32 years and keep up my certification. My point was this committee is not necessary and most members don't have the background to decide what is right and what is wrong. There is already a professional vehicle for complaints.

I worked on ambulances in New Haven, private companies, tended to all sorts of medical calls from broken toe nails to people severed in half. When people call for an ambulance their adrenalin is pumping and time stands still. Yes, it seems like the response takes forever even if it is only a few minutes to arrival. When the EMTs and Paramedics are caring for a patient they are doing just that, caring for the patient and in some instances trying to calm the family while doing so. These folks have certain things to do that can not be done in a rolling ambulance....IV's etc. These do take time and need to be completed without harm to the patient!
This helps the hospital staff administer meds quickly upon arrival. Also, this allows the medic on the call to administer meds prescribed by a doctor via two way communication from the waiting ER if necessary. Driving to a scene is nerve wracking too! Unless you've driven an emergency vehicle with lights and sirens you don't understand. The driver has more of a burden than driving a personal vehicle being sure they have a clear path as there are many people that DON'T PULL TO THE RIGHT because they don't hear the siren for one reason or another. I've ranted enough but these folks put themselves on the line in an attempt to provide quality service. When a call comes in...they respond immediately. Chief Hanks stated there is a State of CT agency that will accept your complaint and research it. J T

My family has had to call numerous times unfortunately for my dad and each and every response was handled professionally and above and beyond the call of duty. Each time they took their time and treated both my mother and father with the utmost respect. For anyone to say they blame them for a death is totally outrageous unless they have proof and then it should be taken up with an oversight department that can look into the complaint and not just thrown out carelessly on a post. I can only imagine the calls that they encounter on a daily basis and I sure as hell don't cringe when I see them, I hope for them that the call turns out well for all involved. I'm not sure what this is all about but I question the motive.
D. Mariano December 13, 2012 at 01:33 am
Agreed
D. Mariano December 13, 2012 at 01:34 am
Great job by all!
D. Mariano December 13, 2012 at 01:35 am
Did they not save him because why? On purpose? They didn't like him?
AnonEMT December 14, 2012 at 05:40 am
I have to say that Lisa's comments are extremely rude and ignorant.
D. Mariano December 14, 2012 at 03:55 pm
agreed
Lynn F. December 21, 2012 at 03:36 am
I agree with Truth Teller as to why isn't there an oversight committee for our Police Dept???
Lynn F. December 21, 2012 at 03:40 am
I honor law enforcement officials, however, there have been a few instances in other citizens and landlord occurrences where the police dept seemed lax and needed accountability for!!!
