Motorists in the Thomaston area are advised to use extra caution and be observant while driving due to the sighting of a moose near Route 8, the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection stated in a Monday, Oct. 1, press release.
Moose near roadways pose a particular danger because their dark color and tall stance make them difficult to see at night and, once struck, more likely to collapse through the vehicle windshield.
All moose and deer vehicle collisions should be reported to local, state, or DEEP Environmental Conservation Police Officers at 860-424-3333.
Additionally, residents throughout the state are encouraged to report moose sightings on the DEEP Web site at www.ct.gov/deep/hunting.
Connecticut has a resident moose population estimated at 100 to 150 animals. They are found most often in the northeastern and northwestern wooded corners of Connecticut but have been seen in most other parts of the state.
