Naugatuck Veterans Council Hosts POW/MIA Vigil

The Naugatuck Veterans Council's POW/MIA Committee is sponsoring a POW/MIA vigil at the Naugatuck Green on Saturday, June 14 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The purpose of the vigil is to keep the public aware of the ongoing issue regarding members of our military who are considered prisoners of war (POWs) and/or missing in action (MIAs) from all U.S. Wars that have, to date, not been accounted for.

Earlier this year, there was a resurgence in Congress to increase the efforts to  establish the status of each POW/MIA in order to provide closure to their families.

The search continues for remains and other information which would provide enough detail to determine the faith of each of these individuals who served their country with honor.

Mock prisoners will be placed in two bamboo cages for one hour periods from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Opening ceremonies  begin at 8:10 a.m.

The Naugatuck Police Color Guard will present the colors; former state senator Bob Dorr will give the opening comments.

Retired deacon Terry Nolan will give the invocation. The Naugatuck Lodge of Elks #967 will present a flag day ceremony at 4:10 p.m.

Closing ceremonies are at 5:10 p.m. The guest speaker is Doris Maitland, sister of Air Force SM/Sgt. Andre R. Guillet (MIA/Laos, '66).

Father Charles Haggerty will give the benediction. Colors will be retired by the American Legion State Color Guard and the Naugatuck Fire Dept. Color Guard.  The event is held rain or shine.
