MoveOn.org Political Action Endorses Chris Murphy for Senate

Citing Murphy’s progressive leadership in the House, MoveOn members commit to aggressive grassroots effort to send him to the Senate

In a year when Americans are looking to elect leaders committed to rebuilding the middle class, MoveOn’s members in Connecticut voted overwhelmingly to endorse Chris Murphy. Noting Murphy's proven track record fighting for working families throughout his six years in the U.S. House of Representatives, MoveOn members expressed confidence in his ability to take the fight for the 99% to the Senate.

MoveOn has more than 90,000 members in Connecticut and of those who participated in the endorsement vote, more than 85 percent voted to endorse Murphy.

"By this time, with years in the State Legislature, and 6 years as our Congressman, Chris Murphy is a seasoned legislator,” said Malcolm, a MoveOn member in Sharon. “He possesses high intelligence, a great ability to communicate clearly, and undisputed integrity and honesty. His record is excellent. He is just the person we need as our Senator."

Max, a MoveOn member in New Milford, agreed, "Chris has been a dedicated progressive voice in the House for 6 years. We need him in the US Senate!"

"I'm thrilled to earn the endorsement of MoveOn and their thousands of grassroots activists all across Connecticut," Murphy said. "We've already fought together for universal health care, pay equity for women, and stronger Buy American laws. Now it's time to take our fight to the U.S. Senate. We know that Linda McMahon is going to vastly outspend us in this campaign, but together we'll prove that her millions are no match for boots on the ground spreading our grassroots message."

“In his time in office, Chris has shown himself to be a true champion for the 99%,” said Daniel Mintz, MoveOn’s National Director of Coordinated Campaigns. “Chris helped pass Connecticut's landmark campaign finance reforms, fought to include a public option in health care reform, and helped pass ethics reform in the U.S. House to reduce corporate influence in Washington. So it’s no surprise that MoveOn members are fired up to send him to the Senate.”

As part of their support for the Murphy's campaign, MoveOn’s thousands of members in Connecticut will help provide the grassroots support—both online and on the ground—needed to propel him to victory.

MoveOn.org Political Action is a political action committee powered by more than 7 million Americans from every state and every congressional district. Since its founding in 1998, MoveOn has raised more than $29 million in small-donor contributions and MoveOn members have volunteered tens of millions of hours for progressive candidates. MoveOn members believe in the power of grassroots action to make our country a more progressive place and elect candidates who will fight to put the American Dream back within reach for all Americans.

Luca... being a dumb politico who doesn't listen to Limbaugh at all, I wasn't sure if this post was supposed to be serious or comedic! Now being that it is almost 9:00 AM I have to go get my Sunday infusion of the weekly broadcast talking heads, across all channels (FOX, CBS, NBC, CNN et al... even the dastardly FOX News once in a while!) After all, you won't know what the other side is saying if you don't listen to them once in a while!
Janis Hardy July 29, 2012 at 01:06 pm
Does anybody ever wonder if this 'rich guy' campaign would even be employed if the incumbent Democrat in office was some white guy? After all, I believe the Kennedy family is wealthier than Romney is and I don't recall any complaints about their wealth when John and Bobby ran for office. How often has any side made much of an issue about a candidate's wealth? After all, you have to be independently wealthy personally in order to be able to afford to run for the Presidency! How many middle income folks do you know that could afford to take 2 years off from his or her day job to go out on the campaign trail? Somebody has to pay the bills for their family and if they aren't wealthy enough to take 2 years off then they might not be able to run.
And didn't we get past this religion thing when John ran for office, or is being Catholic sort of OK but otherwise you have to be a WASP? PS: I am neither a bigot nor a racist....

I wonder how many more years Bush will be blamed for world problems? 10? 20? It seems to be the problem with society today, no personal responsibility just a blame game. I think people should research the Moveon.org movement and the man behind it. If anyone does she research on George Soros they may be surprised as to his power in the world. Whether you vote for Murphy or not being associated with the radical MoveOn movement is not positive for his campaign. Tax and spend has been the way in Washington for years and its time to stop spending money we don't have. It's also time to stop demonizing success. People come to this country for freedom and the ability to be successful.

Janis, the "rich guy" campaign is basically about whether Romney has any understanding of what life is like for someone who is not a millionaire. Remember when McCain couldn't recall how many homes he and his wife owned? When Kerry was attacked for his wife's fortune. Mitt Romney had a bigger tax deduction for his wife's horse ($77,000.00) than many families earn in a year. Pretty hard for John Q. Voter to relate to that.
The real campaign is about how Romney will "fix" the economy. He doesn't like to talk about being Governor of Massachusetts because that health care issue comes up and he is trying to distance himself from that. His "success" at Bain Capital is supposed to be his primary qualification, yet making profits for himself and his investors sometimes meant losing jobs for many American workers. The one tax return he has released showed that he paid a lower tax rate than most middle class families, yet he supports more tax breaks for millionaires and billionaires. Many conservatives have called on him to release more tax returns, but he seems to think that revealing all the (I presume) legal loopholes he used to avoid taxes would make him look bad. I have no idea what you mean about the "religion thing". Are people suggesting that Romney is secretly a Muslim? I haven't heard anyone attacking him for his religion. Well, maybe a few hard core evangelicals.

I suspect Bush will be judged by history and the historians will blame him for bringing the country near to bankruptcy for starting two wars, one for WMD's which never existed; allowing banks to sell CDO's and CDS's without regard for financial integrity; and passing tax cuts for the rich allowing them to garner even larger shares of money without creating any jobs. Since we have had those Bush cuts for over eight years and the argument is they allow the job creators to create jobs then why aren't we currently awash in jobs? Only a fool would believe extending then will result in any change fron the status quo, ie, the rich will only get richer.
JHS July 29, 2012 at 10:15 pm
Walt- remember the Democrats in COngress voted for every spending bill and the war bills that Bush requested. Democrats try to escape their responsibility. Plus Clinton signed Glass Steagal repeal, never regretted it and Dodd/Frank prevented additional regulations on Fannie and Freddie. What were the Dems doing about the coming subprime crisis in 2007 when they took over Congress? Nothing! And the reason for the sluggish economy, the slowest recovery since WWII, is because the Democrats established more regulation and taxes that greatly affects business. And business may be waiting to see what other anti business regualtion will be comming out by the wacky Dems who seem to think taxing the rich is the answer to everything, even though those taxes will reduce the deficit little. Government is out of control and the Democrats have made it worse. We need someone to reduce the size of government and stop the spiral of spending. Obama and the Dems don;t know how to cut. If the Republicans, the pressure will be on to reduce government. Thousands of regualtion are continuing to be written because of Fin Reg bill and Obamacare and each one strikes at business.

I encourage MoveOn to be very active in this campaign. The more Americans learn about who you are and what you stand for, the faster they will "moveon" to whatever candidate you're not supporting. It won't be Fox News that causes President Obama to lose... it will be you. Keep up the good work!

JSH- MSNBC is no longer a reliable source of non-partisan news.
Dino July 30, 2012 at 12:16 am
MSNBC never was a reliable source of non-partisan news. It was founded by Jeff Immelt back when GE owned NBC as a 24/7 Democrat election propaganda machine. In return, Mr. Immelt has received presendential appointments while his company has netted lucrative new federal contracts - and guess what multi-billion dollar company paid no US income taxes last year?
Dino July 30, 2012 at 12:25 am
Bush will be judged a bad president, and the gentleman following him will be judged as much, much worse. While it's possible to point to many poor presidents, history will be generally kind to chief executives such as Bush and Carter because they meant well but were unable to handle the responsibility. When they look at President Obama, they will have to admit to him being the first president who actively and purposefully harmed this country for his own political and ideological ends.
Janis Hardy July 30, 2012 at 02:41 pm
MSNBC was established in 1996 as a joint venture between Microsoft and NBC to compete with CNN. (These were the days of Jack Welch, NOT Jeff Immelt.) In the beginning, both Ann Coulter and Laura Ingraham were affiliated with the channel. I understand that, as a policy matter, well established during the Welch years, GE never had any input into the programming choices made by any of the NBC affiliates. Jack Welch was also a presidential advisor, but also as a policy matter, always chose to keep himself and his company out of the public eye (precisely because of these kinds of unknowledgable comments like yours). It was Barack Obama, NOT Jeff Immelt who chose to put Immelt in the public eye. Perhaps because Immelt was a Republican and Obama wanted to take advantage of that and claim to be so bi-partisan?
Large companies like GE have also been affected by the downturn in the economy.. as we well know when looking at our 201K's... They had no FED income tax liability in 2010 for legitimate IRS reasons (like operating loss carry-forwards), but the company paid millions that year in every other kind tax they were required to pay. Please get your facts straight before you decide to get on your soap box.
JHS July 30, 2012 at 04:30 pm
still doesn't change the fact that MSNBC is primarily a left wing dominated mouthpiece for the Democrats.
JSH July 30, 2012 at 06:55 pm
Right On Dittoheads!
Why can't MSNBC be fair and balanced like the example the voice of reason on the right has set? Roger Eugene Ailes (born May 15, 1940) is president of Fox News Channel, chairman of the Fox Television Stations Group. Ailes was a media consultant for Republican presidents Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, and George H. W. Bush and Rudy Giuliani’s first mayoral campaign (1989).

Re the judgement on Pres. Bush, he at least respected the office and the American people, and the Rule of Law and Separation of Powers. He also kept Americans safe from terrorists after 9/11.
Obama does not respect his office, our nation's founders or the Constitution, the Rule of Law or Separation of Powers, or the American People. He won't even allow the military and National Security agencies like the FBI to NAME the existential threat and call it what it is, "Islamic extremism"!!! He also meets with Muslim Brotherhood and other terrorist sympathizers in the WH. Obama believes our nation is nothing special or unique, and has actively promoted the destruction of our national SOVEREIGNTY, both as a senator and as president! Then there is the matter of his ridiculous belief in a "fixed pie" theory of economics, such that people in other countries can only get out of poverty if Americans become poorer! That is exactly why his first term (please, God, may it be the last!!!) has only made our economy and unemployment much WORSE!!! That was actually Obama's objective, although he always says otherwise. He loves putting millions more Americans into a state of DEPENDENCY upon government as the 'Daddy,' because that makes most of them afraid to vote his party out of office, for fear they will starve, or because they like not working!!

Yea, but maybe 9/11 would never have happened of George II didn't spend August pretending to be a rancher, and not meeting with the security folks.

What ignorance! Did you never hear of Jamie Gorelick, the Clinton crony appointee in the "Justice" department responsible for the "Wall of separation" that kept the various intelligence and U.S. Security agencies from communicating vital national security threat information with each other?!!
Maybe 9/11 would never have happened if Jamie Gorelick had not been bumped up to a job she had NO qualifications or experience for!!!!! http://steveking.house.gov/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=3389&Itemid=300100

A bit from the above link:
...“We need to establish open channels of information sharing between agencies, but not cripple them with top-down control. The testimony today established that there was not a single model of an intelligence culture that ‘got it right.’ We must find the models we can use to create the types of agencies that can think outside the box. “Also, to concentrate privacy protection responsibility in the Executive Branch sets the scene for many more bureaucratic, Jamie Gorelick-styled ‘walls of separation.’ These walls hinder the US response to terrorism. In addition, if the bureaucracy determines that certain types of data should not be kept, such as religion, ethnicity, background, or sexual orientation, then every special interest group will be exempt from intelligence analysis, and we will be left with a very small pool of information with which to prevent future terrorist attacks.” We are still vulnerable to terrorist attacks, not only because of Janet Incompetano, but also because the "administration" won't allow government agencies, like the FBI, and the military to call the Islamic EXTREMISTS what they are, or allow the TSA and others to inspect those who pose the real threats!! This misguided "political correctness" is what caused/allowed the slaughters at Ft. Hood and elsewhere!

18% of Americans are indeed unemployed… if you listen to the Republicans who include school children in that number. The current number of unemployed working-age Americans is 8.2%, which is still bad, but significantly lower since Obama's inauguration. Icing on the Dems' cake: since Jodi Rell left office, CT's unemployment rate has dropped along that same pattern.
If I were you, I'd send Chris Murphy a letter and ask him to see if he can appropriate you a new computer in the next federal budget. Your Shift key seems to be sticking, and your Google searches are being redirected to FoxNews.com.
James August 3, 2012 at 02:20 am
@Don Sherman - Unfortunately, yes. I'm hardly thrilled about spending more, but you have to spend money to make money.
When I was in debt, I kept spending my money on personal investments: a better car so I could job hunt farther from home, a college education, and living expenses during that period. (Fortunately, this was easy because Obama hadn't yet said that credit card companies can't throw credit lines at college kids.) I graduated college with tons of debt; however, I'm now making much more money than I was now, and while a lot of it is going to debt payments, I'm much better off because of it — even if the Republicans can accuse me of being a tax and spend liberal. Had I decided to instead cut spending and hoard my meager income, I'd be a college dropout still making minimum wage, and the Republicans would accuse me of being a lazy welfare-collecting liberal. Personally, I'd rather live a pretty-good life with manageable debt, than to be completely austere and still living in my parents' basement.

Jersey Shore is one of the most-watched shows on TV, but that doesn't make it the gold standard of American culture.

@Southbury Resident, would you mind a little fact-checking? Good, here I go.
Unemployment: we're ranked 19th nationwide. Yes, CT went up 0.1% this month, but we still have a net job gain since 2010. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._states_by_unemployment_rate http://bit.ly/QkYsw8 The crime rate? It's fallen in recent years despite a few unsurprising hot spots: http://www.wtnh.com/dpp/news/crime/crime-stats-drop-in-connecticut-in-2011 Highest gas prices? I think we rank #2 for gas tax (48.5¢/gallon?, second only to NY), but overall, we're #7 in the union. Still high, but hardly the highest, and unsurprising for the greater NYC area. (For what it's worth, I drive a clunker and a guzzler between here and upstate NY, and I still find prices reasonable.): http://gasbuddy.com/GB_Price_List.aspx Raised taxes? I'm not posting my tax returns online, but I will say that I got huge refunds for tax years 2010 and 2011 — meanwhile, I actually owed money in tax year 2009. In short, Democrats are as responsible for this mess as your definition of "highest" is correct. The economy was slipping into moribundity well before November 4, 2008.
JHS August 3, 2012 at 01:29 pm
James- Republicans don't decide the unemployment rate. THE BLS does and 18% is in accurate number and they don't count school children. THe unemployment rate was under 8% when Obama took office. So it hasn't budged much because Obama and the Dems are incompetent.
42 months of 8+% unemployment, a record since 1948; lowest labor participation rate of 63.6% since 1981; weakest recovery since WWII; record 5.5 trillion in new debt; lowering of US credit rating; largest tax increase in history, Obamacare; UAW bailout costing taxpayer 26 billion because the UAW, Obama supporters, were treated as first creditors, unheard of in bankruptcy; billions wasted by DEP on green energy loans to companies that failed, Solynadra, First Solar, Fisker and others that were Obama supporters. Obama violated the Constitution on at least 3 occasions, with the healthcare mandate unconstitutional under the Commerce Clause, contraceptive executive order violates Freedom of Religion, un approved appointments when Congress still in session, not enforcing immigration laws, or voter intimidation laws (New Black Panther Party); Obama’s anti business policies, FinReg, Obamacare, DEP and attitude have damaged the country ,stalled hiring and will hurt the small business owner. This is his legacy of failure. And the media refuses to vet him or demand he open his college, attorney and professorship records.
Gerald M. Gaynor August 3, 2012 at 02:17 pm
There's no shortage of self-righteous ranting about irrelevancies on this thread. The bottom line for many people is that an endorsement by an organization with the suspect history and funding of MoveOn.org is an automatic disqualification for public office.
For all arguing about what the employment numbers are, the bottom line is that unemployment has been above the number that Obama used as a scare tactic for well over 14 months. He wasted billions of dollars bailing out his friends and contributors but he failed to meet the standard of success that he set for himself. He told us in no uncertain terms that if he failed to halve the national debt and deal with unemployment he didn’t deserve a second term. He doesn’t and neither does anyone who supported the policies that have made us a laughingstock: our enemies don’t fear us; our allies don’t trust us; and, the economy is in a shambles.

Well, lets invade Iraq, that worked!
Gerald M. Gaynor August 3, 2012 at 02:47 pm
BDS is alive and well with the Obamarama Cheerleaders. Try something new and honest; defend Obama’s record. This election is going to be a referendum on what Obama has done not what Bush did or how Romney made his money. No amount of diversionary nonsense is going to change the minds of people looking at gas, food, fuel and electricity prices in November.
What was a “failure of leadership” under Bush should be considered to be a failure of leadership under Obama. Neither he nor his supporters get to demand a different standard of judgment. One would think that a Harvard trained lawyer would understand that when you “inherit” something you own it. To continue to pretend that every failure is the fault of his predecessor is the height of dishonesty; to believe those claims is the height of idiocy. Those who support his policies are equally blameworthy.
Dino August 3, 2012 at 02:53 pm
If the unstated purpose of invading Iraq was to contain Iran, then I'd say that Iraq worked pretty well, especially since they're constructing bomb materials with the approval of our own White House.
Dino August 3, 2012 at 02:56 pm
I don't understand why Murphy would take pride in being the butt boy for George Soros, but that's what he did when he accepted moveon's endorsement. Maybe he's gambling that the percentage of mindless dependent morons in this country (and this state) has reached the tipping point where most people are too interested in when their next government check comes in than they are in the actual state of their country. And he may indeed be right.
Janis Hardy August 3, 2012 at 05:17 pm
And let us all not forget that Christopher Donovan has also been endorsed by MoveOn.org, along with all the other public employee and other unions.......

For all those interested in political discourse (and the attendant lack of civility that is rampant these days) I just finished reading a new book by Jonathan Haidt, titled "The Righteous Mind, Why Good People are Divided by Politics and Religion". It was a great read and Haidt proposed some cogent ideas about why liberals and conservatives believe what they do so passionately. For anyone even remotely interested in understanding the bigger picture, as well as understanding the 'other side', this is an eye opener! You can access further reviews at Amazon.com. It's worth checking out....
