Naugatuck Community Choir Winter Concert

December 11 at 3 p.m. at St. Hedwig's Roman Catholic Church

The Naugatuck Community Choir, under the direction of Mr. Mark Silva, will perform a selection of holiday music in the beautiful St. Hedwig's Church 32 Golden Hill St, Naugatuck on . Mr. Todd Gorski will serve as the accompanist. The concert is free but free will offerings will be gratefully accepted.

The NCC is made up of local singers who meet weekly at Naugatuck High School to prepare two concerts each year. The director told me, "I'm looking forward to our Dec. 11 concert for several reasons. The music was chosen by its members this time right out of the choir's own library. Also, we'll be performing at St. Hedwig's for the first time. A new venue is always exciting. It's a steadfast group that has managed to maintain its membership of about 40 singers in spite of Mother Nature's efforts to the contrary! I urge everyone to come out and support Naugatuck's very own choir. I'm certainly proud to be its director!"

The singers have been working hard since September preparing for this concert.  I will be attending and I hope that music lovers will fill St. Hedwig's Church this year for what is always a great afternoon of music.

This year's winter program features the following pieces:

JESUS, OH, WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD – LLOYD LARSON

I was able to attend the concert on the scheduled date because the weather actually cooperated. As a former member of the NCC, it was a different experience for me to sit in a pew and just listen. I was impressed at how well the forty-one-member choir was able to fill the church with their voices without amplification. Todd Gorski and his page turner switched between the piano and organ for the first half of the program and then stayed at the piano after intermission. The performance opened with a lovely medley of Noel pieces and Christine Michel, soprano, had a pretty solo in I Wonder as I Wander. My two favorite pieces in the first half were The First Noel intertwined with the melody of Pachelbel’s Canon and Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring with Mr. Gorski on the organ. Highlights from the second half were the gospel choir piece Jesus, Oh, What a Wonderful World and the humorous The Twelve Days After Christmas by Frederick Silver. The one hundred minute concert ended with a vocal warm up for the audience led by Mark Silva followed by a carol sing-a-long. The audience clearly appreciated all of the Christmas-themed selections. The concert was recorded and will be available on CD. I have added some photos of the concert above.

I wholeheartedly agree with Eric. I am thinking of taking my account to a different bank in protest.Read More (NAUGATUCK Savings & Loan perhaps) May sound silly to some, but in my opinion, changing the name of such an historic institution to me is blasphemous, not to mention sounding stupid. ION indeed!
