Naugatuck HS Lady Greyhounds Host 5K for Scholarship Fund

The NHS Girls Basketball team ran for Dawn Hochsprung Scholarship

UPDATED Jan. 19, 2013 12:30pm

At Naugatuck High School this morning, several NVL Girls Basketball teams participated in their own satellite 5K road race to raise money for the Dawn Hocksprung Scholarship Fund. The 5K planned in Newtown became so big that organizers asked area teams to hold satellite races in their own towns. Because the players were unable to run the track at the high school, several mile "tracks" were set up on the school grounds. Naugatuck High School, Sacred Heart High School, Holy Cross High School, and Wolcott High School were all represented at the Naugatuck run. Before the race NHS Coach Jodie Ruccio said, "I am very excited for the girls to have a chance to do something for a good cause!"

MaryAnn Cyr Suarez, a niece of Principal Dawn Hochsprung, wrote "WWDD?? ('What would Dawn do?') Thank you again for all the support and thank you to the runners! My aunt would have been so proud..."

Coach Ruccio posted this after the race: "Great job today - raised lots of money for The Dawn Hochsprung Scholarship Fund. Coaches and kids ran all around the high school. Thanks to Sacred Heart, Holy Cross, and Wolcott for running with us! And thanks to Seymour and Torrington for sending donations."

When all the donations were counted, the total raised was $1550 and they are still waiting for some donations from other NVL teams.

The Lady Greyhounds, the Naugatuck High School girls basketball team, will host a 5K Road Race at Naugatuck High School on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013. The race will be held to raise money for the Dawn Hochsprung Scholarship Fund.  Coach Jodie Ruccio explains that the race in Newtown got so big that the girls decided to host their own private run with other NVL girls players only.

The entrance fee is $10 for the girls, and donors may sponsor one of the players.
