Obituary: Betty Fernandes, 87

Betty M. (Dougherty) Fernandes, age 87, passed away on Tuesday December 11, 2012 at Saint Mary’s Hospital VITAS Unit.  She was the widow of Manuel Fernandes.

Betty was born in Williamsport, PA on April 10, 1925, daughter of the late William Henry and Audrey Dougherty.  She was a longtime Naugatuck resident and she had retired from the Footwear Division of Uniroyal after many years of service.  She also worked for the Sperry Company in Naugatuck.  Mrs. Fernandes was the oldest member of the Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Naugatuck.  She was an avid fan of the New York Yankees.

She leaves four sons, William Fernandes of Naugatuck, Clayton Fernandes of Waterbury, Roland Boughton of Landing, NJ, and Michael Boughton of South Carolina; a daughter, Juanita Fernandes of Belmont, NJ; a sister, Norma Dougherty of Richmond, CA; eight grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Her funeral will be held on Saturday December 15, 2012 at 12:30pm from the Naugatuck Valley Memorial/Fitzgerald Zembruski Funeral Home, 240 North Main Street, Naugatuck, to the Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church, 170 Coen Street, Naugatuck for a service at 1p.m.  Calling hours will be held at the funeral home on Saturday from 11:30am to 12:30pm.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Naugatuck Visiting Nurses Association, 600 Rubber Avenue, Naugatuck, CT 06770.  Thanks for their outstanding and loving attention to Betty’s health and safety, she was able to remain in the comfort of her home until the end.  To send an on-line condolence, please visit www.naugatuckvalleymemorial.com.
