Obituary: Gerard J. Cordeau Dies at 81

The following obituary was provided by Naugatuck Valley Memorial Funeral Home.

NAUGATUCK — Gerard J. Cordeau, 81, of Ruela Drive, Naugatuck, passed away on Friday, March 2, 2012 at Saint Mary’s Hospital after a brief illness. He was the husband of Florence (Cool) Cordeau.

Mr. Cordeau was born in Waterbury on May 16, 1930, a son of the late Emile and Rose (Depeault) Cordeau. He was a longtime Naugatuck resident since 1967 and a retiree of Connecticut Light and Power in Waterbury where he worked for 37 years. He was an Army Air Corp. veteran proudly serving during World War II.  Among his many passions, he enjoyed retreats at the Holy Family Retreat Center, fishing, hunting, traveling with his wife, but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his children and grandchildren. He was a communicant of St. Mary Church.

Besides his wife of 58 years, he leaves three sons, Thomas Cordeau and his wife Donna of Goshen, Paul Cordeau and his wife Lori of Naugatuck, Peter Cordeau and his wife Karleen of Goshen; his three sisters, E. ‘Sonny’ Bourassa of Waterbury, Marion Godin of Washington State, Bertha Bisson of Hilton Head, SC; six grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Lionel and Robert Cordeau; a sister, Theresa Dubois; and a grandson, David Cordeau.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, March 5 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Church, 338 North Main St.  Friends are asked to meet directly at the church at 9:45 a.m. Full military honors will be accorded at the church. Burial will be at the family’s convenience. 

Calling hours will be held at the Naugatuck Valley Memorial/Fitzgerald Zembruski Funeral Home, 240 North Main Street, Naugatuck on Sunday from 2-4 p.m. Members of the Naugatuck Veteran's Council will meet at the funeral home at 3:15 p.m.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105. To send an on-line condolence, please visit www.naugatuckvalleymemorial.com.
