Obituary: Jose P. Monteiro, 81, of Naugatuck

Mr. Monteiro's passions were cooking and watching sports.

 

Mr. Jose P. Monteiro, 81, of Naugatuck, passed away on Tuesday, November 13, 2012 at the VITAS Innovative Care Unit at Saint Mary’s Hospital.  He was the husband of Sybil (Henderson) Monteiro.

Mr. Monteiro was born in Belen, Para, Brazil on June 12, 1931, a son of the late Jose Dias Monteiro and Antonia (Passos) Monteiro.  He was a Naugatuck resident since 1965 and retired after 19 years of service from Ormond-Sylvania in Watertown.  He also worked at U.S. Rubber Company in Naugatuck.  Among his passions were cooking, watching sports, especially the Mets and soccer.  He was a communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Church.

Besides his wife of 43 years, he leaves two sons, Mauro and Macia Monteiro both of Brazil; four daughters, Marcio Monteiro of Brazil, Antonia Henderson Hidimoglu and her husband Alisan of Naugatuck, Greta Henderson Monteiro of Waterbury, Cynthia Ann Vasquez and her husband Malo of St. Cloud, FL; two brothers and two sister all of Brazil; five granddaughters, Marla and Vanessa Vazquez, Jazmine Monteiro, Beth Ann Smith, Zehra Hidimoglu; a grandson, Adam Smith; three great-grandchildren; a cousin, Odette Campos of Naugatuck; several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the staff of the Harold Leever Cancer Center and the VITAS Innovative Care Unit for the exceptional care given to Jose over the past few years.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, November 17 at 11am at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 2071 Baldwin Street, Waterbury.  Friends are asked to meet DIRECTLY at the church at 10:45am.  Burial will follow in St. James Cemetery, Cross Street, Naugatuck. Calling hours will be held at the Naugatuck Valley Memorial/Fitzgerald Zembruski Funeral Home, 240 North Main Street, Naugatuck on Friday evening from 4-7pm.  To send an on-line condolence, please visit www.naugatuckvalleymemorial.com
