Extreme Heat Sets Off Gas Station's Fire Suppression System

The hot temperatures caused the fire suppression a system on top of the Stop & Shop Gas Station to malfunction Thursday.

The fire suppression system on top of the Rubber Avenue gas station's roof dumped about a quarter of its contents Thursday afternoon, Fire Chief Ken Hanks said.

The material that was released was baking soda, causing large plumes that looked like smoke, Hanks said. There was no fire and investigators have determined the heat lead to the malfunction, he said. The fire suppression system is triggered by heat.

"The gas station had chosen to shut down operations until the system is fixed," he said.

Several workers were at the gas station in Mountview Plaza Friday afternoon with a large crane, which was used to deliver huge fire suppressant tanks to the roof.
