Man Charged With Raping Woman on Christmas Day

Naugatuck woman victim of sexual assault after trying to end a relationship, police said.

A New York man is facing felony charges after police said he raped a woman on Christmas Day.

Johvanny Herrera, 36, of 14 Linwood Ave., Huntington, was taken into custody on Thursday while appearing at Waterbury Superior Court for a separate charge. He was held on a $250,000 bond.

Naugatuck police said Herrera came to the home of a 31-year-old woman on Dec. 25. The couple had been in a dating relationship and the woman, who was from Naugatuck, wanted to end the relationship.

According to the Republican-American, the two got into a four-hour fight and, at that time, Herrera picked up the woman, threw her on the bed and sexually assaulted her.

Naugatuck police Officer Mike Favale said a juvenile was also at home. The Republican-American, citing court records, reported the juvenile was Herrera’s son who had heard the fighting happening and was ignored when he told the couple to stop.

The youth told police he was watching videos with headphones during the argument, which was happening upstairs, the newspaper reported.

Herrera was charged with first-degree sexual assault, risk of injury to a child and disorderly conduct. He is due back in court on March 7.
