Man Sentenced to More Than 3 Years for Passing Counterfeit Bills

The man passed fake money in exchange for several expensive items at Wal-Mart stores, including the one in Naugatuck.

The Naugatuck Police Department assisted federal investigators in their case against a man who was sentenced to 42 months in prison Wednesday for passing counterfeit bills at Wal-Mart and other retailers. 

Shaun Whitehead, 26, of Brooklyn, N.Y., had paid for expensive iPads and Bose earphones with counterfeit $100 bills at stores in Naugatuck, Windsor, Waterford, Lisbon and South Windsor. In Naugatuck, the incident occurred in February 2011.

On April 10, Whitehead was found guilty of five counts of passing counterfeit obligations. He was sentenced Wednesday to 42 months (three-and-a-half years) in prison, followed by five years of supervised release, according to a news release from Deidre M. Daly, acting U.S. attorney for the Connecticut district.

Whitehead has been in custody since March 9, 2011, when he was arrested in Massachusetts on a state larceny charge. He has been in federal custody since Aug. 24, 2012.

The U.S. Secret Service, with assistance from police departments in Naugatuck, Windsor, Waterford, South Windsor, Naugatuck and North Attelboro, Mass., plus the Connecticut State Police, investigated the case. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Felice Duffy and Ray Miller prosecuted the case.
