Naugatuck Man Arrested After Putting SpeedyDry in Boss' Food

The man said he was upset with his boss, who was giving him a hard time over his subpar job performance, police said.

A Naugatuck man was charged by Waterbury Police Wednesday with assault after he admitted putting Speedy Dry in his boss' oatmeal.

William Lampron, 43, of 7 Wood St., a former employee of the Waterbury Parks Department, said he placed the substance in his boss' oatmeal at that job because he was angry with the boss, a 50-year-old man who told police he was unhappy with Lampron's job performance, Waterbury Police stated in a news release.

The supervisor began experiencing severe stomach problems after eating the oatmeal, which he kept in a canister in his desk, police said.

"The supervisor checked the oatmeal and found what he believed to be SpeedyDry mixed in with the oats, and he suspected Lampron because he had been experiencing problems with Lampron over his standard of work," the news release states.

SpeedyDry is a granular substance used to soak up liquid spills such as water, oil and antifreeze. The amount of SpeedyDry ingested was not life threatening, but it can cause extreme intestinal distress when ingested and it does contain a known carcinogen, according to the news release. Police seized the laced oatmeal as part of the investigation.

Lampron was charged with second-degree assault and second-degree reckless endangerment. He turned himself into Waterbury Police Wednesday and was released on a $5,000 bond. He will appear at Waterbury Superior Court on Dec. 13.

Lampron had been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation but resigned shortly before his arrest, police said.

Should rename naugatuck to naugabury.

I'm a "naugatuck man", not him. I work hard, own a house, volunteer. I get a good review at work because I'm honest and give 100%. I hate when this type of person makes the news, and other good people in town do not. I've never seen this guy anywhere, nor do I ever want to. I don't think these people we read about here and in the newspaper are representative of the good people in our town.

I agree. I'd say at least 75 percent of the stories we write are positive, but people remember the negative ones. Also, if you know good people who are worthy of being written about, I'd love to hear about them. Thanks.

Great response Paul.

It is true that these folks are not representative of the good people who live in Naugatuck. But they are representative of a good portion of Naugatuck residents. Disappointing, yes, but undeniable.

Your right , bad news sells , good news is often skipped when reading headlines . Although it is important that we know who these people are , lets not let them steal the spotlight from those who do great stuff , and are ever mentioned . I propose we put the first few articles of good things in the paper to the front ,But that would stumble sales so that will never happen .

Uh I moved to this town about a year ago and this guy is pretty much par for the course. Give him a red pickup and one of those silly "Don't Tread On Me" flags and he's a dead ringer for the average Naugatuck inhabitant.
Leslie December 7, 2012 at 03:02 pm
I don't understand why people in Naugatuck think they are better than people who live in waterbury!??? I grew up in Naugatuck and have lived in waterbury for the past 15 years now and never had a problem.
Paul Singley (Editor) December 7, 2012 at 03:21 pm
I put good news out front on a regular basis. For example, earlier this week we had two police stories, one which became the top story of the week. However, I lead my daily newsletter with the story, video, photos of the town's holiday celebration on the town Green. That is the online equivalent of putting the story at the top of the fold on the front page.

Leslie: good point. There are many great people in Waterbury, and many great people in Naugatuck. Unfortunately, there are some who do things like this. Unfortunately, that needs to be written about, too. I agree with all of the posters who say we should not ignore the positive stories, though. I will continue to keep that in mind. Thank you.

Not even close to the average Naugatuck inhabitant. If that's what you think, I'd love to introduce you to some of the real Naugatuck people who make this a good community. I'd need your name, though. So email me. paul.singley@patch.com

@ Citizen, it's police blotter. It may be bad news, but it's factual, and the bottom line is we should know about it. There is plenty of good news on here, but the blotter is essential. Don't read the police blotter if it creates a problem for you.
citizen December 7, 2012 at 04:32 pm
Paul, you do a great job, my point was that people should not use the few that get arrested as a representation of the average person in this or any town.
Paul Singley (Editor) December 7, 2012 at 04:33 pm
I gotcha. Thanks

naugy do have great people, im tired of those jerks coming here and making our town look like crap,

SpeedyDry is about the same thing as Kitty Litter. Who could eat Kitty Litter in their oatmeal and not notice?
It is a gritty breakfast indeed
Don Carten December 14, 2012 at 05:30 pm
I agree. This is more of a prank than a crime. Heck, I've put far worse than glorified kitty litter in my bosses lunches (not you Ed) over the years. Oh, and by the way, for "Shoreline Transplant," I do drive a red pickup truck. Sorta proves your point, eh?

I wholeheartedly agree with Eric. I am thinking of taking my account to a different bank in protest.Read More (NAUGATUCK Savings & Loan perhaps) May sound silly to some, but in my opinion, changing the name of such an historic institution to me is blasphemous, not to mention sounding stupid. ION indeed!
