Naugatuck Man Assaults Female Officer

Police officer assaulted while trying to serve warrant in Lantern Park.

A Naugatuck man is accused of assaulting a female Naugatuck police officer Friday in Lantern Park.

Police went to 99 Lantern Park Drive to serve a warrant to Nicholas Rizzio, 43, who had been involved in a Feb. 25 incident in which he pointed a knife at a woman and then ripped a phone out of her hand while she tried to call police, according to a police report.

Rizzio punched the female officer in the face and began to wrestle with officers, police said. The officer was not seriously injured. Officers ended up tazing Rizzio because he kept fighting to avoid being cuffed.

For the Feb. 25 incident, he was charged with threatening, disorderly conduct and interfering with an emergency call. For the assault, he was charged with interfering with an officer and assaulting public safety or emergency personnel. He was released on a $15,000 and appeared Monday at Waterbury Superior Court.
