Police Pursue Stronger Charges in Falling Incident

Following the death of Salomon Martinez, Naugatuck police are looking for harsher penalties.

The Naugatuck Police Department is pursuing harsher charges for two men involved in the death of a man who fell some 40 feet from a fourth-floor apartment at 8 Pond St. on Jan. 16.

Kyle Gonzalez and Matthew Chandler, both 20-year-old Naugatuck residents, were charged with assault and conspiracy at assault following the incident. But the victim, 24-year-old Salomon Martinez of Stratford, died in the hospital over the weekend. Police say his death was a result of injuries sustained in the fall and could change the case.

Naugatuck police are working in conjunction with the Waterbury State's Attorney's Office to determine any future charges. The case is an ongoing investigation, police say.

Gonzalez and Chandler are jailed in lieu of $500,000 bonds.

Police say they assaulted Martinez before he died, but say they do not know exactly how he died because Gonzalez and Chandler are not being forthcoming with information. The incident occurred after a night of binge drinking that ended in a melee in the apartment.

The person who threw the party plus everyone who fought should be getting in trouble too.. EVERYONE got involved so there allllll at fault in my eyes.

Tommorow we are going to wake a 24 year old kid. Where am I that these kids dont understand the severity of what has happened. Do you guys realize that your friends took the life of another person. Do you know that a mother and father are now without their son because you guys decided to fight over 10 dollars and all you are worried about is that your friends have to go to jail. I hope that they never see the light of day again. Thats what happens when you kill someone.

I totally agree Gloria, have been saying this all along...police are called out to that apt constantly, and that girl is always getting her name in the paper....Ya think maybe now it will come down over there??

The other sad part is that the victim leaves behind a very young daughter who will never know her father.

@Angry Citizen I could not agree more! Over ten lousy dollars we lost a great guy his parents lost a son his brothers a big brither his daghter a father. No matter how long they are in jail their family can see them speak to them and hug them we can't do any of that but pray and look at photos of our loved one.

Lets not overlook that a 24 year old with a child decided to drive from Stratford to Naugatuck to attend a drinking party on a Wednesday night. Immediately he put himself in a situation that someone with maturity and responsibility should avoid. No one needs to pay the ultimate price for their poor choices, but all I have been reading is everyone faulting everyone else including the police without talking about or learning from this. If the police sat outside this residence you can bet that someone would have accused them of harassment. Lets hope all those involved and all those reading these tragic accounts of this terrible tragedy learn from this.

Super Dave you are correct on some things but sadly the kids nowadays don't learn lessons from things like this they just think it will never happen to me!

Sincce when is it illegal to drive from stratford to naugatuck to attend a party on a wednesday night? Is it a crime because you have a child to do this? As long as you have a sitter and your over 21 who cares.

Paul Singley March 26, 2013 at 01:24 AM
Cheryl: The police have not made any more arrests in this case. I will triple check with the Naugatuck PD tomorrow. The state has not filed any further charges than what is mentioned in this article. Matthew Chandler is due back in court on April 29. Kyle Gonzalez is due back in court on April 25.
