Police Pursue Stronger Charges in Falling Incident

Following the death of Salomon Martinez, Naugatuck police are looking for harsher penalties.

The Naugatuck Police Department is pursuing harsher charges for two men involved in the death of a man who fell some 40 feet from a fourth-floor apartment at 8 Pond St. on Jan. 16.

Kyle Gonzalez and Matthew Chandler, both 20-year-old Naugatuck residents, were charged with assault and conspiracy at assault following the incident. But the victim, 24-year-old Salomon Martinez of Stratford, died in the hospital over the weekend. Police say his death was a result of injuries sustained in the fall and could change the case.

Police say they assaulted Martinez before he died, but say they do not know exactly how he died because Gonzalez and Chandler are not being forthcoming with information. The incident occurred after a night of binge drinking that ended in a melee in the apartment.
