Police Tell News Photographer from Belgium to Go Home

Monroe police remain vigilant in protecting Sandy Hook Elementary School families and staff from intrusions following the fatal shooting in Newtown last month.

It's been one month since the tragic shooting in Newtown and Sandy Hook Elementary School students have been taking classes at 375 Fan Hill Road in Monroe for over a week, but some members of the news media are still trying to take pictures of children at the school.

On Thursday, a woman from Belgium's VBN Television was seen setting up a camera on a tripod in the Fawn Hollow Elementary School parking lot in an attempt to take photos of Sandy Hook Elementary School across the driveway. Police gave her a verbal warning and sent her on her way.

Ever since it was announced that Sandy Hook students would attend classes in the former Chalk Hill School building in Monroe, police have secured the campus from members of the national and international media.

During a Monroe Police Commission meeting this week, Chief John Salvatore and Capt. Michael Flick told commissioners that camera crews from as far away as Turkey, England and France have either been ticketed or turned away with verbal warnings.

In one case, they said a French reporter tried to create a diversion, so her photographer could sneak past an officer. Needless to say, the strategy didn't work.
