[Update] Police: Thieves Flee After Stealing $30K In Merchandise

Three men stole approximately $30,000 worth of cell phones from the Naugatuck Walmart at 3 a.m. Thursday and fled on Route 8 toward the lower Valley, police said.

The men were spotted by a store employee holding the cell phones and a screwdriver, police said. They threatened the store clerk with the tool and ran out before fleeing in a car, police said.

Workers in the 24-hour Walmart on New Haven Road gave police a description of the vehicle, and state police later confirmed that vehicle was involved in a crash on Route 334 in Seymour, Naugatuck Lt. Bryan Cammarata said.

"Naugatuck Police responded to the location and the three occupants of the vehicle were identified as the same subjects involved in the incident from the Naugatuck Walmart," Cammarata said in a news release. "The subjects were treated and released from local hospitals and are being detained by Naugatuck police, who continue to investigate this incident."

Terrance Smith, 30, of Amityville, N.Y., was charged with conspiracy at first-degree larceny and conspiracy at first degree robbery and is being held on a $50,000 sureth bond.

Arden L. Scott, 24, Orlando, Fla., and Tyriek Dennis, 24, of Windenance, N.Y., were charged with first-degree robbery, first-degree larceny, second-degree criminal mischief, conspiracy at first-degree robbery, conspiracy at first-degree larceny and conspiracy at second-degree criminal mischief. They were being held on a $100,000 surety bond.
