Southwood Fire Caused by Man Using Blowtorch

Nine people were displaced by the fire Friday night at 933 Rubber Ave.

A fire that displaced nine people at the Southwood Gardens apartment complex Friday was caused by a man using a blowtorch to remove glue from a kitchen floor.

That is according to Naugatuck Fire Marshal Bill Scanlon, who said the man was trying to remove glue that was used to hold tiles on the floor. The tiles had recently been removed and the man was trying to melt the glue, Scanlon said.

The fire is ruled an accident, Scanlon said. He did not release the man’s name and said it is unclear at this point whether the man was working on behalf of the apartment complex. Scanlon said he also did not know whether the man was licensed as a home contractor and that a police detective is looking into that.

The fire spread from a floor in apartment A of complex eight to a sheetrock wall and moved quickly, Scanlon said. Several people were inside the complex when the fire broke out. Neighbors and police officers knocked on doors and got everybody out. Nobody was injured.

A neighbor is organizing a fundraiser to help those who have been displaced. Scanlon said the apartment complex has vacant buildings that it will put the families in temporarily.

I call BULLS**T on this. I'm sorry but I will tell you that these IDIOTS they hire to do maintenance don't even have a green card. They are all illegal aliens and they don't even have the right to do half the "work" in these apartments. I know for a fact they don't know what they are doing. I watched one of them use a blow torch to dry plaster on my bathroom ceiling and son's bedroom! I can't believe that this person is getting a slap on the hand for this. I watch a police officer trying to track the guy down and he found him and three other men hiding in an empty apartment! If it was such a "mistake" why wouldn't he have called 911 or said something to someone. I am disgusted at this whole situation. It's bad enough that I am stuck living here until I am through with college but I am even more embarrassed to be living in this cesspool! Maybe the owner of this place needs to stop being such a tightwad slumlord and hire proper contractors, etc to do the repairs here. He bought this place for $7,000,000+ and drives a brand new BMW or Mercedes. Maybe I am being out of line, but I am so angry and upset over this situation. The negligence of that man has caused these poor families to lose what little they probably have!

Hey guys. I understand the concerns. Just an FYI, I believe he can be charged if he is performing this kind of work without a license. So we'll stay on top of this story. Thanks. Best of luck.

I wholeheartedly agree with Eric. I am thinking of taking my account to a different bank in protest.Read More (NAUGATUCK Savings & Loan perhaps) May sound silly to some, but in my opinion, changing the name of such an historic institution to me is blasphemous, not to mention sounding stupid.
