BETHANY - A man
and a woman in their late 60s were transported by ambulance to Yale-New Haven
Hospital Tuesday night following a structure fire in a mobile home community at
1070 Amity Road, Route 63, near the Naugatuck border.
The incident happened about 8:20 p.m. when a fully involved structure fire in a detached garage was reported at trailer No. 53 in the Bethany Commons community. It appears as if the man and woman both went into cardiac arrest while they were trying to move their cars out of the garage, Bethany Fire Chief Bob McSherry said.
Thirty-one volunteer firefighters from the Bethany Fire Department were training about a mile away when the call came in and they rushed to the scene, along with Bethany Ambulance and EMTs from American Medical Response, AMR. They performed CPR on the patients while firefighters doused the flames within 10 minutes, McSherry said.
The patients' names were not released Tuesday night. As of late Tuesday, McSherry said he could not verify or speculate on their conditions. No firefighters or bystanders were injured.
Flames were contained to the one detached garage, which is prefabricated. It sustained extensive damage.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation as of Tuesday night.
