Good News! Naugatuck Library Does Not Need To Close Two Days a Week

Naugatuck library will still close early on Fridays.

It had appeared starting today that the Howard Whittemore Public Library would have to be closed on Mondays and Thursdays beginning today, but that is not the case.

In fact the only change from last year is that the library will close at 1 p.m. instead of 4 p.m. on Fridays.

Here is a message from Board of Trustees Chair Charles Marenghi posted to Naugatuck Patch:

"In response to the outpouring of emotions we encountered from our patrons after the announcement of the Thursday and Monday closings the library board has decided to rethink our proposed cuts for FY 2014-2015.

Mayor Mezzo reached out to us and offered to help with our snow removal costs. This saved the library at least $2100 next year. In addition the library board voted to cut $20,000 from our repair budget and to use those funds towards operational hours. Both of these modifications helped us to restore Thursday and Monday hours.

Please note, we are still cutting all cost of living wage increases, restructuring our insurance employee premium share, removing funding for programming and professional development, as well as closing earlier on Fridays.

In the event our repairs exceed what we have left on that line item we reserve the right to change hours to pay for such overages."
