Gov. Malloy's State of the State Speech

The 2014 Legislative Session got underway Thursday with Gov. Dannel P. Malloy delivering a State of the State speech.

The full text of his 43-minute speech, which many interpreted as the precursor to the first-term Democrat announcing his re-election campaign, is embedded with this article.

The Republican Response: "Repackaged Broken Promises"

Connecticut Republican Party Chairman Jerry Labriola Jr. was quick to respond to Malloy's speech. In a press release issued that same day, he said:

“What we heard today was a speech rich in rhetoric to launch a campaign to save a governorship short on results.

“Instead of proposing any substantive changes to the job-destroying legislation that has been a hallmark of his tenure, Governor Malloy repackaged the same broken promises that filled his 2010 campaign and proposed an election year budget filled with gimmicks and even more spending increases.

“In an insult to the thousands of Connecticut residents who are still unable to find jobs, Dan Malloy continues to claim his policies have been a success. But the numbers don’t lie, while the rest of the nation has seen real economic recovery, Connecticut continues to lag far behind under Dan Malloy’s failed leadership. For 22 months straight, our unemployment rate has far exceeded the national average – 27,000 fewer Connecticut residents are working today than when Dan Malloy took office.”
