Local Conversation: Car Tax Bills Give Many Sticker Shock

Tell us how you feel about the increase in car taxes and what could be done to give taxpayers some relief, if anything.

Naugatuck residents have received their car tax bills this week and many are stunned to see how much they have increased.

Due to an increase in the tax rate - which went from 33.55 mills to 44.8 mills after a state-mandated revaluation - the motor vehicle tax bills have increased by about 25 percent on average.

Many residents have taken to social media sites, such as their own Facebook pages and on those of local media sites - including Naugatuck Patch's Facebook page and Twitter feeds - to discuss their frustration over the increase.

Though the bills say the taxes are due on Aug. 1, people have until Sept. 3 to pay without incurring a penalty, Tax Collector Jim Goggin said.

We want to hear from you on this subject. Has your car tax bill gone up? How significant was the increase? And should Connecticut abolish the tax on motor vehicles? Tell us in the comment section.
