Mayor's Swearing In Ceremony to be Family Oriented Affair

The public is invited to City Hill Middle School tonight for the ceremony.

Tonight’s swearing in ceremony for Mayor Bob Mezzo will not be filled with the glitz and glam that one might expect from a top elected official who just won a third consecutive term by a 2-to-1 margin.

Instead, it will be much like the political events Mezzo’s team of supporters have thrown over the past four years: family-oriented affairs that put as much emphasis on their respect for the office as they place on fun events for children and families.

“We try to make our events enjoyable not only for the adults who come, but for the children, as well, so they can get a better understanding of public service,” Mezzo said. “And in keeping with that transition, we decided to have this one at City Hill (Middle School) and involve some of the school groups, bands, choirs - student participation is the central theme of it.”

The inauguration will kick off at 6:45 p.m. at City Hill, 441 City Hill St., with light appetizers, desserts and beverages. The actual ceremony will start at 7:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

The invitation states that “all are invited to join Bob, his wife Eileen, and their children for the swearing in. This is a family friendly event with music by the NHS Chamber Singers and the City Hill Middle School Band. Artwork and poems from Naugatuck’s elementary and intermediate (5-6) school children will be on display. The NHS JR ROTC will also participate in the ceremony.”

Mezzo’s first swearing in ceremony in 2009 was also family-oriented, with bounce houses on the Green, face painting and free hot dogs and soda for those who attended. Mezzo says he includes families because this is a tight-knit community filled with many close families, and he wants his administration to reflect that sentiment. Prior to the election, he told a reporter that while he works everyday to do what he believes is in the best interest of Naugatuck, what will ultimately define his own life is how he is perceived by his family.
