Volunteers through an IRS-sponsored program will be helping any applicants fill out federal and state tax forms until April.

Volunteers at the will be doing free federal and Connecticut income tax returns during the spring.

From Jan. 26 to April 12, just a few days shy of tax day deadline, the senior center will be offering the free sessions through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program (VITA). All free sessions have to be made by appointment by calling 203-720-7069.

The program is sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service. Find out more information here.

Touting the successes of the program, Senior Center Director Henry Frydman noted that 85 individuals had their tax returns done last year, garnering $65,000 in refunds for these people.

In 2012, the senior center will have four people assisting residents, Frydman said.

The free sessions are open to any who apply and you don’t have to be a resident of Naugatuck. Frydman estimated there would probably be 100 applicants this year.
