Referendum Signature Collection Nearly Complete

The president of Naugatuck Taxpayers in Revolt says the organization has collected nearly as many signatures as it needs to force the 2013-14 budget proposal to a referendum.

The group needs to get about 1,400 signatures in order to force a referendum on the combined $111 million town and school budgets. As of Tuesday, the taxpayer watchdog group had about 1,200 signatures, said Alec Wargo, the group's president.

If the signatures are collected by Thursday, May 30, voters will head to the polls sometime next month and will be asked separate questions about whether they support both the town an school spending plans.

"We'd like to get 1,600 signatures so we can have that cushion," Wargo said outside of Stop & Shop in Mountview Plaza Tuesday, where he was collecting signatures. "Hopefully, we will finish up the signature collections in the next day or two."
