The 2011 Connecticut Mastery Test results showed a mixed bag for Naugatuck elementary and middle school students.

The state Department of Education released the results Wednesday morning. In a written statement, the department said student performance on the CMTs was “generally better” in 2011, with a continuing trend of incremental improvement over the previous year.

In Naugatuck, results obtained through www.ctreports.com showed scores increase at the grade 3 reading, but decrease in writing and mathematics.

Naugatuck students at the intermediate level attend either Hillside or Cross Street schools. Students at the grade 7-8 level attend City Hill Middle School.

“It is encouraging to see that our public schools are making progress by increasing the numbers of students who are moving into the proficient level of performance and from the proficient level to the goal level,” Acting Commissioner George Coleman said in a statement. “However our greatest challenges are ahead of us. We must accelerate our efforts to improve the outcomes for those students who are at risk of scoring below proficient, while at the same time challenging all students to perform at higher levels."
