Naugatuck Schools Closed Due to Snow

After weeks of little snow, the slushy wintry mix is finally here.

Naugatuck public schools are closed on Friday due to the snow that fell overnight.

Initially the district issued a two-hour delay, however shortly therafter the delay was changed to a full cancellation, said Wayne McAllister, school business manager.

Superintendent John Tindall-Gibson said the reason for the change was it was taking longer than expected to get the roads cleared. The decision to move to a full cancellation came around 6:30 a.m.

Tindall-Gibson noted that some busses run wide routes that often include travelling on narrow streets. With slick conditions it can make it dangerous for those busses to travel, he said.

St. Francis-St. Hedwig School, which operates on the same bus scheduled as the public schools, is also closed due to the weather.

It's the first cancellation of 2012 and the only school cancellation since the freak October snowstorm knocked out power to Naugatuck schools for three days.

Because of the mild winter, the borough has rarely been forced to cancel or delay school.

Temperatures are expected to climb to 41 degrees during the day, according to The Weather Channel.
