Naugatuck Schools Closed Thursday and Friday

Borough cancels school for the rest of the week as three schools are still without power.

Naugatuck public schools will be closed Thursday and Friday as CL&P and the borough’s Public Works crews continue to clean up and restore power following the October snowstorm.

Borough officials have said school has been canceled for the rest of the week, and that students will report back to school on Monday, Nov. 7.

As of Wednesday, Superintendent John Tindall-Gibson said three out of 11 borough schools — Naugatuck High School, Western Elementary School and Hillside Intermediate School — are still without power for a fifth day in a row.

According to the latest projections, Naugatuck is 29 percent without power, meaning just over 4,200 customers are in the dark.

One of the most prominent barriers to getting power restored to Naugatuck High School was an AT&T pole that snapped behind the school. The pole came down behind the school after a nearby tree collapsed onto power lines, forcing the lines and the pole down.

A new pole had been restored by Wednesday morning, and AT&T had rewired the phone lines, however the high school’s custodial staff was still awaiting CL&P to get there to replace the power components.

Tindall-Gibson told Patch the school was waiting — “along with another half-million people” — on CL&P Wednesday.

Once power is back, the superintendent school would be back in session.

The school’s February break, held during week of President’s Day, has also been cancelled. This means there will be no vacation days from Feb. 22-24 in 2012.

The holiday weekend, Feb. 20-21, will remain in place.

So far, the borough has used up six “snow days,” the first three following Tropical Storm Irene and the latter three this week due to the October snow storm.

Tindall-Gibson also said the last day of school is now Monday, June 18.
