Naugatuck Student to Host 5K Race for Charity

Proceeds from the March 24 race at Naugatuck High School will go toward a foundation that provides assistance to children with terminal illnesses.

Senior Andrea Neagu raised over $1,000 when she held a charity volleyball/badminton tournament, titled "Wish Upon a Net," back in November.

Now, Neagu is getting ready to hold her second event, a 5K race, which is slated for 10 a.m. on March 24 on the grounds of Naugatuck High School.

And, while the badminton tournament was solely for students and faculty, this upcoming road race, titled "Race for the Wish," is open to the public.

As part of Neagu's year-long senior capstone project, the 17-year-old student is raising money for the nonprofit organization, “The Kids Wish Network." Like the badminton tournament, the funds accumulated from the road race will go toward two girls that are coping with terminal illnesses.

Neagu said she began planning the race just last month and has so far gotten 20 registrations, although she said she anticipates that number to pick up once the word gets out.

Neagu provided Patch with a flier that contains the details, as well as the registration form (see the attached PDFs). The fee to register ahead of time is $20, while it costs $25 the day of the race.

The form can also be obtained by visiting the high school’s website, or can be picked up Naugatuck High School, which is located at 543 Rubber Ave. Registrations are permitted the day of the race. Minors, however, must have an adult present to sign the permission form that day.

If you have questions, or are interested in sponsorship opportunities, email Neagu at brunette09@snet.net or Tim Reilly at reillyt@naugy.net.

Neagu said this isn't the last "Wish" event this year. She said she hopes to hold another "Wish Upon the Net" tournament in May, as the event was very popular among her classmates.
