Naugatuck Students Plan Walk-a-Thon Friday for Beloved Teacher
Naugatuck High School Distributive Education (DECA) students are hosting a special event to benefit a beloved teacher. World Languages teacher Rebecca Cruz was recently diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer and took a medical leave of absence from her position at the high school.
Since her diagnosis, the school has been helping to raise funds for Cruz in a variety of ways. A "Miracle Minute" was held during DECA’s annual Rip the Runway fashion show.
This weekend's walk-a-thon is completely dedicated to Cruz. The 12-hour-long event will be held overnight beginning at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 13 and will end at 8 a.m. on Saturday, June 14 on the high school track.
In addition to walking around the track, participants can play games such as kickball, soccer, flag football, ultimate Frisbee and volleyball. The event will also feature area musicians, food vendors and more. A “Glow Show” tribute to Cruz with purple glow sticks will take place at midnight.
So far students have raised over $16,000, according to Naugatuck High School's website. If they raise another $19,000 students will paint a NHS teacher Mr. Dunn purple.
