Naugatuck Students Score Higher in Math, Science on 2011 CAPT Test

Reading and writing scores dip slightly at the goal level, while increase slightly at the proficiency level.

Naugatuck High School sophomores scored higher in the science and math sections of the Connecticut Academic Performance Test in 2011, while scores decreased slightly in areas of the writing and reading sections.

The state Department of Education released the CAPT testing results Tuesday, showing Connecticut sophomores overall scoring higher in math, science and writing. At the state level, reading scores dipped, according to the results.

In Naugatuck, 50.2 percent of 261 sophomores that took math section of the the CAPT test scored at or above goal level in reading, while 85.1 percent scored at or above proficiency. This is up from 43.8 percent at the goal level and 83.1 percent at the proficiency level in 2010.

Of the 270 students that took the science section, 42.2 percent scored at or above the goal level while 84.4 percent scored at or above the proficiency level. This was also up from the 2010 scores, when the results were 36.8 percent and 80.7 percent respectively.

In reading and writing, Naugatuck students scored lower at the proficiency level but slightly higher than the goal levels when comparing 2011 to 2010.

In the reading section, 35.6 percent of 270 students that took the test met the goal level, while 85.9 percent met the proficiency level. This is compared to the 2010 scores, where 44 percent were at the goal level and 85.4 percent were at the proficiency level.

Meanwhile, writing scores in 2011 among 271 test takers hit 56 percent at the goal level and 91.6 percent at the proficiency level. In 2010, the scores were 59.4 percent at the goal level and 85.1 percent at the proficiency level.
