Parent Council to Host Board of Education Debate

The debate between the nine candidates for the board, in both parties, is slated for April 11 from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

The Naugatuck Parent School Council will be hosting a Board of Education debate at City Hill Middle School on Monday April 11 from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Board of Education candidates running for election this spring will be on hand to introduce themselves and provide their stance on several key educational issues.

“It’s important that the town and the people know the officials making these decisions,” said Phil Zembruski, the moderator of the debate. “This debate will give them a good sense of the people running for election.”

According to Zembruski, there are nine candidates running for election: Democrats Jim Scully, James Jordan, Deanna Krzykowski, Debra Brackett, and Republicans Glenn Connan, Diana Malone, Scott Slauson, David Heller and Dorothy Neth-Kunin.

Each candidate will be allowed a three minute prepared statement and then choose a single question from a pool of twenty different prepared questions, other candidate will then have a maxim of two minutes to respond. Each candidate will be allowed a three minute closing statement.

“We are hoping that this debate will help introduce these candidates and let the public feel comfortable with whom they are voting for,” said Zembruski. “More importantly though, it will let the voters feel comfortable voicing their own opinions.”

Naugatuck students have also been given the opportunity to pose questions during the debate. Students interested in submitting a question can fill out forms provided by their Social Studies teachers.
