Scholarship to be Given in Honor of Sandy Hook Principal

Naugatuck High School students who want to pursue a degree in education can apply for the scholarship.

The family of Sandy Hook Elementary School Principal Dawn Hochsprung wants to make sure her legacy lives on at Naugatuck High School.

The family is organizing a scholarship fund that will be given annually to at least one NHS senior.

“Our family has decided the scholarship fund will be for an NHS student pursuing a career in education, a student who has a deep passion for inspiring the love and learning in children,” said Hochsprung’s daughter, Erica Lafferty.

Hochsprung, a 1983 NHS graduate, was shot and killed while trying to protect children in her school during Friday’s massacre that claimed the life of 20 children and six woman at the elementary school. The shooter also killed his mother and himself.

Several people have referred to Hochsprung as a hero for trying to take down the gunman, which she reportedly did only after telling others to hide in her office.

The scholarship fund is being administered by the Waterbury Teachers Federal Credit Union. The credit union has a link to the scholarship fund, which says:

“Dawn was a dedicated teacher who inspired her students to reach their fullest potential. She was admired and respected by her students, colleagues and parents for her caring and nurturing nature and will be sorely missed.”

To contribute to the fund, please bring your donation to one of our offices, or mail to WCTFCU, 772 Straits Turnpike, Middlebury, CT 06762. or WCTFCU, 24 Rowan Street Extension, Danbury, CT 06811.

For additional information, you can speak with a credit union representative at 203-758-9500 or 800-992-2226.

I wholeheartedly agree with Eric. I am thinking of taking my account to a different bank in protest.Read More (NAUGATUCK Savings & Loan perhaps) May sound silly to some, but in my opinion, changing the name of such an historic institution to me is blasphemous, not to mention sounding stupid. ION indeed!
