School District Cancels Teachers' First Day of Work Due to Hurricane

All school activities are canceled Monday. The first day of classes on Wednesday could be pushed back depending on how bad the hurricane aftermath is, Naugatuck school superintendent says.

Naugatuck schoolteachers were slated to go back to work on Monday for the fall school year, however the district has agreed to cancel the first day of work and all activities due to Hurricane Irene.

Superintendent John Tindall-Gibson said he and other superintendents throughout the Northwest Corner agreed during a 1 p.m. conference call to keep all schools closed across the region on Monday in preparation for the hurricane. The storm is due to hit Connecticut at full strength around noon on Sunday, leaving possible downed wires and trees in its path.

In Naugatuck, the cancellation disrupts the first day for borough teachers, which were due to meet at 9 a.m. for a district-wide meeting with the Board of Education. The meeting is tenatively scheduled for Tuesday, however the superintendent said they will wait to see how the conditions are before fully scheduling it then.

“Mostly we’re worried about the power (going out),” Tindall-Gibson said. “We’re going to have to watch and see what kind of flooding we’ll get. We’ll be able to assess that on Monday and people’s abilities to get to work.”

Tindall-Gibson also announced he will be sending out updates to the community and staff everyday at 5 p.m. going forward. Naugatuck Patch will publish these updates as soon as they become available.

Irene is expected to drop five inches of rain or more on the region, with a strong possibility of flooding. This could possibly affect the grounds of Naugatuck High School, which sit near Rubber Avenue — a low-lying road .

The first day of school in Naugatuck is Wednesday, Aug. 31. Tindall-Gibson noted, however, depending on the storm aftermath “it’s very possible” that day could be pushed back.
