School Groups Donate Defibrillator to Senior Citizens

Naugatuck students from Hillside Intermediate School presented the device to the Robert E. Hutt Congregate Housing complex on Wednesday.

The Parent Student Association of , along with SPARKS Daycare and the Hunt family, donated an automatic external defibrillator to a local elderly housing complex on Wednesday.

Four Hillside students — Summer Gallagher, Taylor Hunt, Derek Sampaio and Brandon Sampaio — paid a visit to the complex to deliver the device.

A defibrillator, more commonly known as an AED, will now stay at the housing complex and will be available in case there was an emergency due to a cardiac arrest.

An AED is an electric apparatus that can assist in moments when someone is suffering from a heart attack. The AED provides a shock to the victim and, if applied within the first minute of a cardiac arrest, can save the lives of up to 90 percent of victims.

Local fire officials have since gotten AEDs into every school building in Naugatuck, as well as , the and the .

A total of 350,000 people die each year from hear attacks, and an AED could prevent 20,000 to 100,000 of those attacks, according to the American Heart Association.
