Slauson Wins Spot on Board of Ed. Following Recount

Final results show Republican candidate beating Democratic candidate by seven votes.

After a full recount of all the ballots, Scott Slauson ended up winning a seat on the Board of Education after he beat the lowest vote getter by seven votes.

A recount held on Monday ended with Scott Slauson at 1,301 votes over Deanna Krzykowski, who finished with 1,294 votes, according to official re-canvass results released on Tuesday. (See below for the final vote counts for all the candidates).

Both figures were the exact amounts each candidate received following the May 2 election last week, however since the results were so close state statute mandated a recount. There were nine candidates vying for eight spots on the board.

With Slauson now on the board, the party membership has flipped from being a majority Democratic board to a Republican board. Five candidates from the previous board, made up of Republicans and Democrats, did not run for reelection this year.

With the new board — set to be sworn in during Thursday’s 7 p.m. meeting — there are four Democrats, including Mayor Robert A. Mezzo, and five Republicans.

Slauson, 45, is a former U.S. Marine and his current occupation is in automotive technologies as a software engineer. He has been involved in civic groups and has a long family history in the state. In his candidate profile, Slauson said he ran for a seat on the board because he wants to serve his community and because he has two children in the school district.

According to his biography, his family lineage goes back to 1636 when his ancestor — George Slawson — was one of the original founders of what is now called Stamford.
