Naugatuck Fire Dept. Wins Foley Title

Submitted by Chip Delaney, posted by Paul Singley.

The Naugatuck Fire Department Indians defeated the Glendale Center Giants to capture the 2013 Peter J Foley Major League Division Championship Friday night under the lights at Foley Field.

The Indians were led by a dominating pitching performace by Derek Sampaio, who out-dueled John McGovern of the Giants, to pick up a 2-1 victory. Derek struck out 12 batters over 5 and 2/3 innings, surrendering only two hits along the way. Nate Deptula closed out the game in the 6th for the Indians with a big strikeout. The Indians plated two runs in the bottom of the first inning, on singles by Derek Sampaio and Nate Deptula, followed by a walk by James Bilsky and a passed ball.

John Mcgovern would settle in after this to deliver a tremendous pitching performance, allowing only two hits for the remainder of the game, one of them being a single by Nate Delaney in the 2nd, and another single by Derek Sampaio in the 4th. Mcgovern fanned 9 batters over 5 innings. Two runs would prove to be enough in the end, however, for the Indians. On the offensive side, the Giants were led by Shane Carey, who blasted a solo home run in the 2nd inning for the Giants' only run.

Peter J Foley directors worked very hard to get the field back to playing condition after a one hour rain delay, allowing for a great Championship showcase to occur. The Indians, who finished with an overall record of 13-3, capped the season by completing the traditional victory lap around the field after retrieving their sponsor's sign off the scoreboard.
