Naugy BBall Knocks Off Powerhouse Wilby

With the win, the Greyhounds may have earned a spot in the NVL tournament.

The Naugatuck High School basketball team knocked off Naugatuck Valley League power Wilby of Waterbury 80-73 Monday night at NHS.

Naugatuck was lead by Brandon Kuczkenski, who had 33 points and 14 rebounds. The Mick Pernell had 21 points and nine assists, while Husani Foote had 11 points, eight rebounds and four blocks.

With the win, the Greyhounds (10-9), likely sealed their destiny as the eighth and final seed in the NVL tournament, Coach Mike Wilson said.

“That was a huge win for this team,” he said. “This is a great time of year to be playing your best basketball of the season, and that’s what we’re doing.”

He said the team has had its ups and downs throughout the season and had been plagued by a couple key injuries. But sophomore Jason Bradley is back and is helping the team tremendously, Wilson said.

“It’s a beautiful thing to see these kids stay positive all season and keep working hard,” he said, adding that he believes Naugatuck can beat anybody in the league at this point.

“This is what high school sports are all about,” he said.

Wilby, the second ranked team in the NVL, drops to 16-3 on the season.
