"It sounded like a gunshot went off in the gym!"
That is how Naugatuck High School head boys basketball coach Mike Wilson described a thunderous dunk thrown down during tryouts Wednesday afternoon by one of his star players in the school's Ed Mariano Gymnasium. The dunk was so powerful it shattered the glass backboard into thousands of tiny pieces.
It all happened when Husani Fotte, a 6-foot, 2-inch senior small forward, came down the middle of the lane during a one-on-one drill and a stuffed the ball with a a one-handed, tomahawk-style dunk.
Though Wednesday was still a tryout session, it's safe to say that Fotte will make the team.
Wilson said the forward averaged about 12 points per game last year for the Greyhounds and is the only player on the team currently being recruited by Div. 1 college basketball teams.
If history is any indicator, Fotte's dunk could be a good omen. The last player to shatter the backboard at Naugy was former Torrington player Jordan Williams on Feb. 10, 2009. The 6-foot, 10-inch Williams went on to star the University of Maryland and played last year for the New Jersey Nets of the National Basketball Association.
