A division of the Naugatuck Police Department, the Department of the Dog Warden is located at the Naugatuck Pound. The department enforces animal control laws, taking care of stray dogs and cats, animal-related issues, and other basic needs. There are 17 runs, or enclosed areas, where dogs are placed inside the pound.

The department also takes in animals and will offer them for adoption via a PetFinder.com website. Dogs and cats that are picked up but not claimed within seven days become property of the borough.

Payments for dog adoptions, and other fees, can be by check or cash. The department, on average, takes in more animals than are adopted.

The department services an average of 300 calls a year.

While cats who are sick, injured, or need to be quarantined are taken in at the shelter, the department does not regularly pick up cats who are stray and healthy.
