Naugatuck Church Seeking Parishioners' Input

St. Francis of Assisi parish is holding a survey until June 10 for current, and former, church members.

As part of a five-year strategic plan, St. Francis of Assisi Church in downtown Naugatuck is asking its parishioners about their views on the parish and parish life. The Catholic church’s Strategic Planning Committee has a survey posted on its website, which is open to both current members and former parishioners, said Ken Healy, planning committee member. Healy said the church is in the middle of a strategic planning process and anyone who has been part of the St. Francis family — whether a regular attendee or an infrequent visitor — is asked to complete the survey. “We kind of want to see what the people like (and) what they don’t like,” he said. The survey, however, doesn’t have anything to do with the recent departure of the Rev. …

The churches are I placed by God to LEAD its people and it's people are not to ask or tell what will be changed. I believe the church should not move into the centuries with new ideas but stick with the old; it worked and wil still if we keep the same. Never mind new technology new ideas this is one place tat should not change unless it is done through GOD.   more ›

Which Liquor Stores Are Open Today?

After the governor signed into a law a bill allowing Sunday alcohol sales, a number of Naugatuck package stores said they will open their doors for business today.

Connecticut residents can now buy alcohol on Sundays — starting today. Gov. Dannel P. Malloy signed into law Thursday a bill amending Connecticut’s Blue Laws, giving permittees the option of selling liquor and beer from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays. The law went into effect immediately. Permittees are now also allowed to sell alcohol on Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day, and on Mondays following a Christmas or New Year's Day holiday that falls on a Sunday. State Rep. Rosa Rebimbas, who helped orchestrate the law, gave support of its passage in a comment posted on Naugatuck Patch. The only state left to prohibit Sunday liquor sales is Indiana. Patch checked in with our Naugatuck liquor stores to find out which ones plan on being …

McMahon Wins GOP Senate Nod, But Shays to Run Primary Challenge

Decker, Formica, Winsley, Obsitnik and Roraback win party endorsements for congressional races.

Linda McMahon won the Republican nomination Friday to run for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman, but it looks like there will be a primary for the party’s nod just as there will be in the Democratic Party. The Connecticut Post reported that McMahon, the wealthy chief executive for World Wrestling Entertainment, won the nomination on the first ballot at the party convention in Hartford, but that former 4th District congressman Christopher Shays qualified to challenge her in a primary on Aug. 14. Democrats will also vote on Aug. 14 in a primary between 5th District congressman Chris Murphy, who received the party endorsement on May 12, and former Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz.   Congressional races The …

This weekend, there will be a block party to raise awareness about a mission to make a Legion Park playground handicapped accessible.

A group of Naugatuck community members are hosting a party this Saturday in downtown Naugatuck to raise awareness of an important cause. The Naugy Park Project, an initiative to raise thousands of dollars to create a handicapped accessible playground at the Legion Memorial Field Park, is now underway. The project is being sponsored by the Shepherd - Salem Lodge #78 AF & AM, which is located on Church Street in downtown Naugatuck. Central Avenue School Redistricting Begins

The Naugatuck school district releases information on where Central Avenue students will be going in the 2012-13 school year.

Parents of students at Central Avenue School are being notified this week which of the K-4 schools their children will be heading to in the next school year. Superintendent John Tindall-Gibson said the district sent out letters to the parents on Wednesday informing Central Avenue families that the redistricting process is under way. The Board of Education voted 7-2 to close Central Avenue School next year and reappropriate the building into a less-expensive early learning center. The move is said to save nearly $1 million, as the borough finds ways to save money while dealing with anticipated spending increases. According to a map of the redistricting, available on Mayor Robert Mezzo's blog, Central Avenue students will be reassigned to …

Malloy did not mention about other provisions of this bill, which include package stores selling cheese and I believe fruit!!! Also, as facts were presented to Malloys admin regarding the fact that NY's taxes are cheaper along with the retail price of booze, I am not sure about MA's facts.... This bill will only help SOME neighboring state towns!!! Most people plan ahead for any booze needed for …   more ›
